MALDEN – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Malden Chief of Police Kevin Molis have announced that Steve Brawley, 62 of Malden, was arraigned virtually from Massachusetts General Hospital today on two charges of assault with a dangerous weapon in connection with allegedly assaulting a Massachusetts State Police Trooper and a Malden Police Officer with a knife during an altercation that occurred yesterday in the area of Beach Street and Lynn Street in Malden.
Judge Emily A. Karstetter ordered the defendant held pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for November 17, 2020.
Yesterday, November 12, 2020, at approximately 12:04 p.m. Malden Police responded to the area to provide support to a Massachusetts State Police Trooper who had requested assistance for a man brandishing a knife. During an physical altercation the defendant allegedly attempted to stab the Trooper and a Malden Police Officer. In response the Trooper fired his service weapon striking the defendant. The defendant was placed under arrest and transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where he remains hospitalized. The officers were also transported to an area hospital as a precaution and released.
Today’s arraignment was handled by Middlesex County Prosecutor Lyndsey Davis. As the Trooper involved was previously assigned to the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office the investigation into the officer-involved shooting has been referred to the Office of the Bristol County District Attorney.
