Cambridge, MA, August 10, 2017 — An overflow crowd filled the Eagle Room at Boston City Hall for First Literacy’s annual scholarship award ceremony. Among the 21 scholarship recipients were four graduates of the Cambridge Community Learning Center’s Bridge to College Program: Dora Ajanel and Girlene Green, who graduated this year, and two graduates from last year receiving a second scholarship, Luciana Castilho and Hasna Hassoun.
Boston Mayor Walsh told the assembled awardees, families, and teachers, “This is one of my favorite events,” and congratulated the recipients for their “drive for success.”
The student speaker, Malquisua Sousa, also a Community Learning Center graduate, is preparing for a career as a teacher through courses and volunteer work. She encouraged the students to persist, saying, “Don’t let circumstances of life stop you from reaching your dreams.”
The Community Learning Center graduates are now enrolled in Bunker Hill Community College and plan to support each other through their educational trajectory.
The Cambridge Community Learning Center’s Bridge to College Program helps adults improve their skills and knowledge to be better prepared for college. Students develop their writing, math, study, and computer skills and apply for college and financial aid.
