Mayor Carlo DeMaria recently announced that the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has awarded the City of Everett $16,500 in Recycling Grants as part of the Sustainable Materials Recovery Program (SMRP). The City of Everett has earned 6 points and will receive $16,500.

The Sustainable Materials Recovery Program directs a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Waste Energy Certificates to recycling programs approved by MassDEP. The Recycling Dividends Program provides payments to municipalities that have implemented specific programs and policies proven to maximize reuse, recycling and waste reduction. Everett will receive payments according to the number of criteria points the program earned.

In 2012, the DeMaria administration launched new trash and recycling programs. Standardized, blue, 64-gallon trash bins accompanied the existing recycling totes.

Mayor DeMaria said, “Working with our residents and businesses, we have been able to increase recycling rates, reduce costs, help the environment, and clean our neighborhood streets. I want thank our residents for embracing these programs.”
