Malden Community Garden Comes to Life

Posted by

Mayor Gary Christenson, Councillor Barbara Murphy and Clay Larsen gathered with volunteers at the newly installed community garden along the Northern Strand Community Trail (Bike to the Sea Path). The garden is located about a 10-minute walk east from Malden High School.  A grand opening is planned for Saturday, October 26th from 2:00-4:00 PM.

Malden residents now have the opportunity to adopt a planting bed for just $20 per year! Gardeners will provide their own plants or seeds and water will be supplied by the city. Volunteers who helped to build the garden will get the first choice of the 25 garden locations.

Councillor Murphy initiated the project which was built by volunteers under the direction of Clay Larsen, project manager for Groundwork Somerville. Mayor Christenson’s office provided leadership, grant-writing support and outreach. Funding was obtained from several sources including a federal community development block grant obtained by the Malden Redevelopment Authority and private donations from Keurig, Inc. and the non-profit organization Seeds of Change. Non-profit partners also include Bike to the Sea, Inc. and the Malden Cultural Council.

More information about renting a garden bed can be obtained by contacting Clay Larson at or 617-908-1022.
