Seventeenth Annual Halloween Window Painting

Spooky frights, gruesome witches, glowing jack-o-lanterns, and scary ghosts come alive as Winchester residents paint Halloween pictures in this wonderful community event. This special event permits the participants to decorate the outside of designated windows of local businesses using specialized paint. 
This year, you can paint a window by yourself or grab your friend or parent and paint one window together. All windows must have a Halloween theme. This event takes place on Sat., Oct. 26. The rain date is Sun., Oct. 27.  Sponsored by Winchester Recreation & Community Education Dept. and the Winchester Youth Center, it has financial support from the Enka Society.

Eligibility: All residents who attend any school in Winchester or reside in Winchester are eligible for this event. Applications, 
regulations, and instructions are available at the Recreation Dept. There is a $20 fee for entries. Entries are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Space is guaranteed to the first 200 entries. Other entries will be accepted based on available windows. For further

Bricks 4 Kidz Lab

The Bricks 4 Kidz Lab is a hands-on class where children explore science, technology, engineering and math concepts using LEGO® bricks. For 1 hour each week, children will build a model based on exciting themes like space exploration, laws of motion, sports and animals. Each class is structured and designed to stimulate the mind and help reinforce problem solving and collaboration. Oh and by the way, they will have fun too! The 6-session program for ages 6-11 begins Monday, Nov. 4, 3:30 – 4:30 pm, at the 
Recreation Dept. or  Tuesday, Nov. 5 2:45–3:45 pm, at the 
V.O. School.

Chemistry Capers

Unlock your inner scientist as you investigate the basics of chemistry in a fun and interactive way. Explore the chemical properties of slime and make super slimy samples to take home. Build a better super-ball, analyze mysterious liquids, and make your own balloons. Not to be confused with the boring kind of chemistry! such as columns and arches.  Kids will select designs to build bridges and soaring skyscrapers. We’ll put our skills to the test to build a house for a bird and construct a geodesic catapult. The 6-session program for ages 5-10 begins Wednesday, Nov. 6, 3:30-4:30 at the 
Recreation Dept.

Nashoba Skiing for Gr. 3–5

Grab your skis and your friends and head out to Nashoba Valley for five Thursday afternoons starting Jan. 9. Beginners can learn to ski while those who are more advanced can sharpen up their skills. All participants must take a lesson. Children also have free ski time each week. Buses for this five-week lesson program leave Winchester at your school’s regularly scheduled dismissal time. We plan to return to Winchester at approximately 7 pm, depending on traffic and weather conditions. If the program takes place on a school early release day, the buses will leave from a designated place school at 1:45 pm. If lessons are canceled because of poor weather, we will try to add a Thursday at the end of the session. Refunds are not available, even if the season is extended because of bad weather and participants cannot attend on the alternative dates. The forms will be available at the Recreation Dept. by Oct. 1.

Participants are not registered until the Recreation Dept. has received all of their completed forms and the registration fee. Registration must be received by December 1st to guarantee placement. Waterville Valley Mountain Resort Skiing: Gr. 6–12

Enjoy this premier resort that is sure to match the skills of everyone in the group!

Join us as we head to New Hampshire on a luxury coach bus with bathroom facilities on board for our Saturday ski program. The program will run beginning Jan. 5 for five weeks. If lessons are canceled because of poor weather, we try to add Saturdays until we have gone five times. Refunds are not available, even if the season is extended because of bad weather and participants cannot attend on the alternative dates (this is also true if the make-up day is during Feb. vacation). Those missing sessions will be given a voucher, which must be used during the 201 season. Buses leave the WHS Parking lot at 7:30 am sharp and return by approximately 6:45 pm, depending on traffic and weather conditions. The fee includes lift ticket and transportation. The forms will be available at the Recreation Dept. by Oct. 1.

Top Secret Chefs

At Top Secret Chefs we offer a wonderful environment where your child can build a foundation that will open the doors to a lifetime of learning. Children will learn a wide range of skills probably without even knowing it. Cooking is a process that has a beginning and an ending and the great thing about the ending is that the kids can have a great meal that they cooked hands-on. Cooking is all about math, science, geography, reading, health, nutrition, and history along with the ability to problem solve, and develop both social and fine motor skills. Just look at a few of the individual skills: counting, vocabulary, shapes, food groups, experimenting, weighing, fractions, culture, family history, sorting, chemical reactions, responsibility, team work, safety, sequencing, creativity, sensory aptitudes, healthy eating, sharing, pouring, chopping, mixing, etc. There is no other activity that a child can learn as much in such a short period of time. The 6-session program for ages 6-11 begins Saturday, Nov. 1, time TBA at the 
Recreation Dept. for Grades 1–5.

You Can Afford College

If… you plan in advance; you understand the financial aid process; and you act early enough to be successful.

Financial Aid goes to the families who plan in advance—ideally before December 31st of the child’s sophomore year of high school. This course will teach you the concepts and strategies that will help you maximize your financial aid by understanding the process, and how implementing strategies may increase a family’s eligibility even if you have a “high income” or own a business. The greatest amount of financial aid goes to the families who act in the years before college.

French for Travelers

This course is designed to enable travelers to France to feel comfortable communicating while ordering at cafes and restaurants, making purchases in

stores, negotiating with street vendors, asking directions and using public transportation. Suggestions for dealing with “glitches” and minor emergencies will be covered. Materials will be supplied in class and an optional book

will be recommended. The one-night class is held Thursday, Oct. 3, 7-9pm, at Winchester High School.


Do you now the warning signs of a heart attack? Would you know what to do if someone had a heart attack? Learning CPR is as easy as A-B-C. Participants will learn and practice emergency rescue skills. This course will combine lecture and stories to help you feel comfortable in case you ever need to 
perform CPR. Topics will include adult, 
children, and infant CPR, rescue breathing and choke saving techniques. Wear comfortable clothing. The registration fee includes the manual and National Safety Council Certification. One session. The class is held Wednesday, Oct. 9, 6:30-9:30 pm at Winchester High School.

Understanding The Stock

and Bond Markets

This course will cover how to read and understand the stock and bond tables, price/ earnings ratio, return on equity, bull and bear markets and what industry shows the greatest promise for future gains. The two-night class begins Wednesday, Oct 16, 6-9 pm, at the Winchester High School.

Chinatown Excursion

Join Master Chef and cookbook author, Rose Lee, while she guides you to the delights of Chinese culture and foods. Visit Asian markets, Chinese bakeries, favorite restaurants, arts and gift shops, and Chinatown’s oldest herbal shop to meet the herbalists and learn about some of their products. Also learn about Chinatown’s exotic fruits and vegetables and how to prepare them.

Enjoy samples of Chinese pastries and Chinatown’s best BBQ. Enjoy many tastes from noodles to tea and a sit-down lunch at a favorite restaurant (The meal cost is not included in your registration fee. Participants share the costs, payable at the restaurant.)
